Conservation is an ever-growing sector of our day-to-day business. Cut & Collect has become a byword in recent times, however just cutting wildflower meadows or pastures with a flail collector is only part of the picture. Other factors have an effect on the overall success of the operation, one of these is the timing of the cut depending on whether it is a spring or summer flowering meadow, others include the cutting height, type of flail and whether scarifying blades should be used to drag out low lying thatch (particularly good in the first year). Another consideration is the creation of margins or islands for invertebrates, possibly with scalloped edges to provide a greater crossover area. Practices like starting the cut from the centre of the field and the use of turf tyres, rather than agricultural tyres, all play a part in the eventual outcome.
